How does the RootThru Seed & Weed Mat work?

With the RootThru Seed & Weed Mat, you plant your seeds directly on the mat and watch them grow and root through it. To install and begin growing, follow these simple steps.

Prepare the soil

Prepare soil flat for broadcast seeding or create ridges/furrows for planting in rows (recommended method). Lay RootThru Seed & Weed Mat with white side up and brown side down. Add water to form RootThru to surface and prepare it for seeds.

The first step in the RootThru Weed Barrier system is to apply to the soil and wet.

Plant and apply compost

Broadcast seeds on flat RootThru Seed & Weed Mat surface or plant in rows in the prepared furrows directly on the barrier or into a thin layer of compost/potting mix (recommended method). Cover seeds with compost/potting mix and water.

The second step in the RootThru Weed Barrier system is to add compost or other weed free growing media on top of the barrier.

Weed less, harvest more

Water daily on top of the RootThru Seed & Weed Mat until plants have germinated and started to root through the barrier. Enjoy less hand weeding throughout the season and a hassle-free harvest!

The third step in the RootThru Weed Barrier system is to harvest crops.

How is the RootThru Seed & Weed Mat made?

The RootThru Seed & Weed Mat is a composite geotextile fabric made from two sustainable, plant-based materials. We've combined the benefits of each material through our proprietary, non-chemical bonding process to deliver the unique opportunity to grow seeds directly through an effective weed barrier.

Brown side

This side is made from sustainably-sourced paper and retains moisture for germinating seeds while excluding light and controlling weeds early in the season.

Apply with this side facing down.

White side

This side is made from polylactic acid (PLA), which is a nonsynthetic, renewable plant-based product. PLA is durable and provides longer-lasting weed control.

Apply with this side facing up.
