How does RootThru Max work?

RootThru Max can be installed and used like traditional plastic geotextile fabric weed barriers. However, unlike plastic geotextiles, RootThru Max can be left in the soil for long-term weed control because it is 100% plant-based and will not girdle your plants as they grow.

Prepare the soil and apply

Clear the garden or field of existing weeds and residues and prepare the soil for planting. Unroll RootThru Max over your planting area and secure the edges with soil, landscape staples, or heavy objects.

Cut holes and start planting

Cut holes for planting your seeds or seedlings through the barrier. Keep the holes as small as possible to prevent weed growth after planting. The size of the planting holes will grow as your plants grow, ensuring that no light unnecessarily reaches the weeds below.

Weed less, harvest more

RootThru Max will provide season-long weed control and is designed to reflect light into the plant canopy for increased photosynthesis, improved plant growth, and cooler soil temperatures.

How is RootThru Max made?

RootThru Max Weed Barrier is a three-layer, composite geotextile fabric made from two sustainable, plant-based materials. We've combined the benefits of each material through our proprietary bonding process to deliver a value-added geotextile.

Outer layers

The outer layers are made from polylactic acid (PLA), which is a nonsynthetic, renewable plant-based product. PLA is naturally white and reflective which increases light in the plant canopy, minimizes harmful soil temperatures, and improves plant growth and yield. The durability and strength of PLA protects the inner paper layer providing long-lasting weed control.

Inner layer

The inner layer is made from sustainably-sourced, heavy-weight paper that excludes light and controls weeds, especially the sedges and grasses that can grow through plastic geotextiles.
